Event Recap | #FlyToFirefly | recphilly

On Thursday night (6/7), REC Philly teamed up with Red Bull to host a Firefly Festival pre-party and conduct a contest to send a lucky group of 4 to the festival in style. And by "in style" we mean in a helicopter. Seriously. “Fly to Firefly”, which took place in Rittenhouse Square at Coda Philly, also showcased two of the city’s most exciting live acts; ill Fated Natives and Vacationer, respectively.

With a successful Firefly Festival-related event in the books less than a week prior, there was no surprise when the line to enter Coda trailed down Walnut Street, around to 17th. Set to open up at 8pm, hundreds of people were eager to shoot their shot at the opportunity to pull up to Firefly in a chopper.

Once the event officially began, attendees flocked to the stage to check out Philly’s own ill Fated Natives.  If for some odd reason you weren’t there, know that the iLL Fated Natives consist of Otheni “O” Thompson at lead guitar/vocals, Joe “Joey Stix” Pointer at drums/vocals, and Bets “Pop Pop” Charmelus at bass guitar/vocals.

As per their official website, “grit, raw passion, and a sense of struggle pumps through the veins of the [group].” But, if you were to see them perform live – names that come to mind include Bob Marley and Jimi Hendrix and a touch of Bad Brains.

iLL Fated Natives were truly a tough act to follow. For any amateur group performing after, it’d be a tasking responsibility. For Vacationer, a veteran sextet with ties to both Brooklyn and Philadelphia, the stage was commanded with ease. The group includes Kenny Vasoli at lead singer/bass, Ryan Zimmaro on drums, Michael Mullin on keyboards/backing vocals, Greg Altman on guitar/backing vocals, and producers Matthew Young and Grant Wheeler. Heavily influenced by electronic rock, Vacationer has been categorized as both psychedelic and electro-dream pop with tropical, island-like vibes..

Pull up on the REC Philly squad at Firefly from Jun 15 – Jun 18, 2017 in the Woodlands of Dover, DE where we’ll be hosting the Northeast Rising Stage, featuring iLL Fated Natives and 12 other talented music acts from the mid-atlantic region
